Meeting someone from the internet for the first time: a safety checklist
Updated October 17, 2026
Meeting someone in person after weeks of chatting is exciting. A few simple precautions make that moment much easier for both of you.
Before you meet
- Video chat first. It confirms they are who they say and breaks the ice.
- Look up their name and photos online.
- Tell a friend who you're meeting, where and when, and agree to check in.
- Don't share your home address until you know the person well.
On the day
- Choose a busy public place: a café, a restaurant, a mall. Not a home or anywhere isolated.
- Get there and back on your own. Have your own ride and a charged phone.
- Watch your drink and drink in moderation.
- Trust your gut. If something feels off, leave. You don't owe anyone an explanation.
If one of you travels to another country
- Never pay for someone else's ticket, visa or lodging, and be wary of anyone who asks. It's one of the most common scams.
- Book your own place to stay and have your return ticket.
- Keep your passport and some emergency money with you, never with the other person.
- Check entry requirements. Rules for Americans visiting Brazil have changed in recent years, and Brazilians need a visa to visit the US. Always check official government and consulate websites.
- Save emergency numbers: in Brazil, 190 (police) and 192 (ambulance); in the US, 911. And your country's embassy or consulate.
Afterwards
Check in with your friend. If the person was disrespectful or aggressive, use Report on the site: it protects others. See also romance scam warning signs.
