How to meet Brazilians online (and stay safe)
Updated October 17, 2026
Brazilians are famously warm, curious and easy to talk to, and millions of them would love to meet Americans: to practice English, to make friends abroad, or to find something more. Whether you visited Brazil, are learning Portuguese, or simply love the culture, this guide shows how to start, how to make a good first impression and how to stay safe.
1. Pick a place built for it
General social networks and dating apps mostly show people near you. To meet Brazilians from the US (or Americans living in Brazil), a site that already builds that bridge works better. On Hello Beijo, Americans see Brazilians and Brazilians see Americans, wherever they live, and the chat only opens when you both like each other.
2. Build a profile people want to answer
- Real, recent photos with your face clearly visible: one smiling, one full-length, one doing something you love.
- A short, specific bio. Instead of “I'm easygoing and like to travel”, try “I hike on Sundays, I make a mean BBQ brisket and I'm learning Portuguese (slowly!)”.
- Write in English. On Hello Beijo, bios and messages can be translated with one tap. Add a line in Portuguese if you can: Brazilians love the effort.
- Say what you're looking for: friendship, dating, language exchange.
3. Open with something from their profile
A lone “hey” rarely works. Mention something they wrote: “Você é de Salvador? I've always wanted to visit!” Open questions keep the conversation going. Our Portuguese phrases for chatting will help you break the ice.
4. Mind the time zone
Brasília time is 1 or 2 hours ahead of New York (depending on US daylight saving time) and 4 or 5 hours ahead of California. A slow reply is often just a time-zone thing. Agree on a time to talk.
5. Safety first
- Never send money to someone you met online, no matter the story: plane tickets, customs fees, medical bills, “investments”.
- Be careful with anyone who rushes to move the chat to another app or says “I love you” within days.
- Have a video call before building expectations. Profiles with the Verified badge recorded a live video checked by our moderators.
- If something feels wrong, use Report. The person won't know who reported them.

Bottom line
An honest profile, real curiosity, patience with the language and an eye on the red flags. That's how meeting Brazilians turns into friendship, language practice or something more.
