Language exchange: how to practice Portuguese with Brazilians for free
Updated October 17, 2026
A language exchange (also called a tandem) is simple: you help someone with English and they help you with Portuguese. It's free, it's fun, and it's one of the fastest ways to get over the fear of speaking.
Why it works
- You learn real, everyday Brazilian Portuguese, with the slang and expressions textbooks skip.
- Your partner is learning too, so nobody judges mistakes.
- It often turns into a friendship, and talking with a friend beats studying alone.
Finding a partner
Huge numbers of Brazilians want to practice English, for work, travel, music or just for fun. On Hello Beijo, mark in your profile that you're practicing Portuguese and use the Language exchange filter in Discover to find Brazilians practicing English.
A method that works
- Half and half. 15 minutes in English, 15 in Portuguese, or alternate days. Both of you win.
- Correct kindly. Agree on how you like to be corrected: right away or at the end.
- Pick a topic. Food, music, holidays, work, your hometown. A topic prevents awkward silences.
- Use voice messages. They train pronunciation and listening, and you can replay them.
- Keep a word list. Review it before your next chat.
Topic ideas
- How does your family celebrate Thanksgiving, or Christmas in Brazil?
- One Brazilian song and one American song you both love.
- What should a tourist never miss in your city?
- Foods you want to try from the other country (start with pão de queijo).
Stay safe
A language exchange is about practice and friendship. The usual online safety rules apply: never send money and don't share personal data. Need a head start? See our Portuguese phrases for chatting.
