How to build a profile that stands out (without trying too hard)
Updated October 18, 2026
Your profile is your first impression. It doesn't need to be perfect: it needs to be real and give people something to talk about. These tips work for friendship, dating or language exchange.
Photos
- First photo: just you, smiling, face clearly visible. No sunglasses, no heavy filters.
- Show your life: a photo doing something you love (cooking, hiking, with your dog, at a concert).
- One full-length, recent photo.
- Don't lead with a group photo: nobody wants to guess which one is you.
- Good natural light matters more than any camera.
Bio
- Be specific. “I like music” says little; “I play guitar badly but sing bossa nova with total confidence” starts a conversation.
- Say what you're looking for: friendship, dating, Portuguese practice.
- Leave a hook: a question or a challenge. “Recommend me a Brazilian song.”
- Keep it positive. Lists of what you don't want push people away.
- Write in your own language. On Hello Beijo, bios can be translated with one tap. A line in Portuguese is a nice bonus.
Details that help
- Mark that you're practicing Portuguese: you get a tag on your profile and show up in the language exchange filter.
- Do the video verification. The Verified badge builds trust and usually gets more replies.
- Refresh your photos now and then.
What to leave out
Phone number, address, workplace, social media handles and anything that lets someone find you off the site before you know them well. See also questions to ask a Brazilian and how to meet Brazilians online.
